The standard I chose was 7.W.1.2 "Students will revise their writing for Word Choice." This decision was based on working with the students' teacher observations (using a six-traits rubric) of writing from sixth grade as well as WriteToLearn information gathered on three other writings from this year. This is in lieu of Emetric data as my class focuses on writing.
Instead of a pretest in Achievement Series, the students will write to a prompt from WriteToLearn. They will first write the essay completely. After finishing a first draft, they will type their essays into the program and submit for feedback once. This will give initial information. The initial information will be included here.
After that is completed, the students will participate in lessons focused on specifically looking at word choice in writing and building resources to improve word choice. Lesson plans will be included on the lesson plan page. Initial observations: Students initially writing to the prompt are writing short essays with basic sentence structure and simple words.
Prompt: "Think of an American, living or deceased, who is a role model for today's young people. Write an essay that explains this person's admirable qualities and achievements."
For results of the pre and post assessment of Write to Learn of the trait, please click here. The blanks are due to absence and lack of computer time for students who have been absent.
